From Classical Control to Intelligent Control with Quanser Aero 2

Aerospace systems provide a challenging environment for control engineering, with coupled dynamics, nonlinear behaviour and sensitivity to disturbances. Classical control methods such as PID remain widely used because of their simplicity, robustness and practical reliability. At the same time, intelligent control approaches are becoming increasingly relevant for systems where conventional controllers can face limitations.

In this webinar, we will use the Quanser Aero 2 to explore the transition from classical control toward intelligent control. Starting with conventional PID-based control, we will examine how different controller structures can be designed and evaluated for the coupled pitch and yaw dynamics of the system.

Building on this classical control foundation, we will introduce intelligent and data-driven control approaches and investigate how their behaviour and performance compare with conventional controllers. The session will focus on the practical aspects of controller implementation, experimental evaluation and understanding the strengths and limitations of each approach on real hardware.

This webinar is inspired by the recent study “Real-Time Experimental Benchmarking of Control Strategies for a Coupled 2-DOF Helicopter,” which compares PID, FOPID, Fuzzy PID/PD and Model-Free Control on the Quanser Aero 2.

What you’ll learn

  • How classical PID-based control is designed for coupled aerospace dynamics
  • How intelligent and data-driven control approaches can complement classical control
  • How different controllers can be compared using real-time experimental results
  • Practical challenges and trade-offs when moving from classical to intelligent control
