From Simulation to Reality: Closing the Sim-to-Real Gap in Robotics and Aerospace

Reinforcement learning offers powerful possibilities for controlling complex robotic and aerospace systems, but training directly on physical hardware is often time-consuming, expensive and potentially unsafe. Simulation and digital twins provide an alternative by allowing RL agents to be trained and evaluated before deployment on a real system.

In this webinar, we will use the Quanser Aero 2 and its digital twin to train reinforcement learning controllers in simulation and then transfer the learned models to the physical hardware. We will explore how different learning strategies and neural network architectures influence the performance and robustness of the trained controller.

A key focus will be understanding and reducing the sim-to-real gap — the difference between how a controller performs in simulation and how it behaves on the real system. We will discuss practical techniques for improving the transfer from simulation to hardware and evaluate which approaches are more effective for learning robust RL controllers.

What you'll learn

  • How to train reinforcement learning controllers using a digital twin of the Aero 2
  • How different RL strategies and neural network architectures affect learning and control performance
  • Why the sim-to-real gap occurs and how it affects real-world deployment
  • Practical approaches for transferring and validating RL controllers on physical hardware
